Carry on Jaywick

11 Sep
A Reading by Dan Murphy The Garage
This is a past event

“I've been fascinated with the world and the characters that Dan has presented.... He has been building very good relationships with key members of this inimitable community and that is now starting to pay him dividends in terms of narrative”

Alecky Blythe (London Road)

"Shine on, every day and night. And that is how we get through Jaywick."

Join new touring company Murphy & Co. and the crtically acclaimed Kuleshov Theatre for a staged reading of Carry on Jaywick, a verbatim play about Jaywick, the former seaside gem of the Essex coast which is currently ranked as Britain's most deprived town.

Through 18 months of research trips and interviews with Jaywick residents, writer Dan Murphy has created a new piece of theatre which tells a pertinent and often suprising story about inequality in the UK today. Carry on Jaywick is about home, identity, and not letting life grind you down.

I hugely enjoyed Dan Murphy's Jaywick. It's a smart, sharp piece with an outstanding cast that provides a compelling insight into British working class culture, giving voice to those who are all too rarely present on our stages. It's also a brilliant dissection of the fetishisation of working class culture by the British media. It's very funny too

Amber Massie-Blomfield, Executive Director at Camden People’s Theatre

A fascinating verbatim play about language, place, and identity... a unique piece exploring social deprivation in unexpected ways, made all the more interesting by the way audiences are invited to share in the literal words of the residents.

Barbara Peirson, Lakeside Theatre
