HighTide Arts Club : Artists Announced

Published August 4 2010

On Friday 13 August, HighTide and a specially selected group of international artists will take over Fringe Central - bringing emerging and established, local and international, multidisciplinary artists together to watch, drink, chat and network.

Jean Abreu Dance : Dance Company

Founded in August 2009 by Brazilian born choreographer Jean Abreu, with the support of The Hat Factory and Arts Council England East, Jean Abreu Dance has emerged from Abreu’s desire to build on the work he has created over 12 years as an independent artist, and establish a dance company that creates innovative performances marked by interdisciplinary artistic collaboration and international cultural exchange.  Jean Abreu Dance produces emotionally powerful and provocative dance theatre performances that explore contemporary issues.  Jean Abreu (Artistic Director/Choreographer) graduated from the Laban Centre in 1999 and was quickly singled out as a unique and exciting contemporary dance talent. Jean subsequently danced and choreographed in the company he also co-founded, the acclaimed Protein Dance. He has toured throughout the UK (including London Dance Umbrella and the Southbank Centre); as well as to the Netherlands, Germany, Spain, Italy, Cyprus, Brazil, Ukraine, Croatia and Mexico. Winner of the prestigious Jerwood Choreography Award (2003), Jean has been an Associate Artist at The Place and an Artist-in-Residence at Dance East. Jean is currently an Associate Artist at Swindon Dance and the Hat Factory.

Made In China : Company

Made In China are brand new. We make performances that viscerally engage with what it’s like to be alive now. So far our work has been physical, excessive, playful and destructive. We want each show to make its own rules. We always ask ourselves where the audience fits in: why should they care and how might they feel? Based in Hackney, London, Made In China are making their Edinburgh Fringe debut this year.

Xana Marwick : Performance Maker

Xana Marwick is a freelance Performance maker, a founding member of Stadium Rock Arts Collective and Drama Artist at Platform in Glasgow. Xana has recently worked with, or created and presented work at: Tramway (Glasgow), The Traverse (Edinburgh), Shunt (London), Battersea Arts Centre (London), The Arches (Glasgow), Derevo and Akhe (Russia), Starcatchers (Scotland), Promote YT (Scotland), The Royal Lyceum Theatre (Edinburgh), Forest Fringe (UK). You Suffer But Why was originally created for Brian Lobel's Cruising For Art (Forest Fringe) and is presented tonight with Edinburgh based artist Jennie Temple.

proudExposure : Company

A theatre collective comprised of artists of varying disciplines based in Glasgow, Scotland. We make theatre for the post-modern age. Our policy and our practice are to promote equality, through entertaining and challenging, yet inclusive theatrical works. Set up by writer/director Drew Taylor in 2008 proudExposure has presented work across the UK – including PULSE festival, Ipswich, Garioch Theatre Festival, Inverurie, and the Subway Festival, Glasgow. Our work is two fold: 1) developing and presenting performance that embraces an active exploration of literary form and 2) developing and producing post-modern forms of theatrical production (including, but not confined to, works of live-art, cabaret, street theatre and circus). Our work is always focused on the development and promotion of young artists. We are proud to share our experiences, we relish in the exposure of human similarities. We are happy to put things frankly and say we're all liars. We like words, even when we don't say them.

Keep checking back for announcements about our visiting international artists and our top secret celebrity guest.
